History

Since the early 1800s the district of Köpenick has been known as the Laundry Room of Berlin. Located at the confluence of the rivers Dahme and Spree there is plenty of clear water and large grassy areas where women could gather and launder clothes and lay them in the bright sun for bleaching. It was at Kopenick, in 1835, where Laundress Henriette Lustig was issued the first permit to operate a commercial laundry. Since that time many other commercial laundries were begun and Köpenick kept being known as the Berlin’s Laundry Room. Near the place where Ms Lustig began her laundry business, and 150 years later in 1985, Lothar and Waltraud Amlow founded yet another laundry. Still in the era of the Berlin Wall, starting a laundry in East Germany was not easy but the Amlow’s venture was successful. As an attraction to get people to come into their shop they decorated the entrance to their shop with an old mangle and other old washing tools. Spurred by the interest in the old tools of washing the Amlows converted part of their laundry building to a museum and the collection of washing tools, irons and all sorts of other related items. The museum, called “Omas Waschküche” (Grannies Wash House), opened formally in 1990, soon became a main attraction in the Kopenick district and was a highlight of the Kopenick Summer Fair, an insider’s tip for the visitors of the “Long Night of Museums”, and was featured in numerous newspaper articles and TV programs. In 2004, the Targatz family of Eberswalde, who also had amassed a large collection of antique laundry equipment, and the Amlow family agreed to merge their collections and start a new laundry museum. The Targatz family, owners of the new museum, operates a large commercial laundry in Eberswalde. A new building housing the collections along with a café was dedicated May 25, 2008 in Eberswalde. TheTargatz museum has gained world class status.Come visit the one-of-a-kind museum, learn of the old ways of washing, enjoy a great meal, and have a most enjoyable time. Among myriad other things, we will show you how to wash with very old washer in Germany. Receipts are used to sustain the history of laundry and of the laundry trade. The work done by laundress Henriette Lustig will not be forgotten.
